I'd guess they are using the trip odometer to try and calculate fuel economy. Wont work.

How many miles are on the car? Engines need accumulated mileage to break-in and deliver best power and fuel economy. Are you using gasoline with ethanol in it? If so that will reduce fuel economy about 10%. How are you calculating the fuel economy?
